type
spatial intervention (activation, installation)
A site-specific intervention on balance, locks, and sluices for Fanfare Amsterdam. A system of ropes and pulleys runs through the structure of the Tetterode building to activate a large lift-gate that divides and obstructs the space. We Transfer is both an installation and an artistic residency within the Broken Channels research programme, where we explore landscapes and mechanisms related to the notion of LOCK & UNLOCK.

A project revolving around the world’s largest sluice, the thousands of keys stored in the Tetterode building, the tons of goods exchanged in the port of IJmuiden, and locks as time-dampening devices.

Visitants are invited to solve the problem themselves, with no leads or instructions.

They want to access the space for a series of events happening in Fanfare  as part of the Broken Channels weekend, but a huge new barrier is on the way. How would you lift it? How much weight is needed to counter-balance?
